Heartleaf Aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium) is also known as Bluewood Aster. Certainly, this species is one of the most abundant, reliable and flexible native wildflowers you can grow. Aster cordifolium brings a soft lavender-blue glow to the autumn landscape — shining bright in both woodland shade and full sun.

Bluewood Aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium)

It’s a favorite among pollinators and gardeners alike, thriving in a wide range of conditions. This plant’s deep, fibrous root system makes it excellent for erosion control, stabilizing slopes and woodland edges naturally. It’s also salt tolerant, making it a great choice for roadside or urban plantings where soil conditions can be challenging.

Interestingly, Heartleaf Aster often pops up on its own in lawns and semi-wild areas. Many people don’t realize that the delicate blue blooms appearing in the grass each fall belong to a native perennial. The plants will flower on tiny stalks if they’re mowed. But, if left unmowed or given even a small patch of freedom, these asters will form graceful clusters that soften the landscape and invite late-season pollinators. What some might mistake for a “weed” is actually a native gem returning to reclaim its place.

In any habitat garden, Heartleaf Aster earns its place. Although it willingly cedes turf to bolder species, it is yet dependable. Obviously beautiful and ecologically valuable, this wildflower is a true friend to bees, butterflies, and the land itself.
