Progress of a Project

Progress of a Project: Before, During, After

Every great private landscape begins with uncertainty. At first, the before stage can look dull, like there’s too much lawn or just generally unfinished. However, this is exactly where transformation begins. The progress of a project starts long before anything looks beautiful.

The “before” photos should just be displayed in monotone black + white, amirite?

Progress of a Project: Let’s Gooo!

During the next phase, the real work takes place. This is the part rarely shown online. Our team evaluates soil conditions, relieves compaction, improves drainage, and adds organic matter. As a result, the foundation for long-term success takes shape. Healthy soil supports healthy gardens, and without it, even the best plants struggle.

All the work happens quietly.
The Jessecology company soil remediation process happens quietly at first. A “coat of brown primer” is all the world sees.

Next comes planting. Native perennials, grasses, and shrubs may look small at first, but this is intentional. We grow our plants organically and select them for strong, resilient root systems. Above ground, they appear modest. Below ground, however, they are building strength and structure. This stage can feel underwhelming, yet it is essential.

Baby plants were chosen for this project, also known as “plugs.” To wildflower gardening novices, this would probably feel like a leap of faith!

As time passes, the design begins to reveal itself. Gradually, patterns emerge and the planting matrix fills in. What once looked sparse begins to feel intentional and balanced. At this point, the progress of a project becomes visible.

Finally, the after arrives. Over one, two, or three seasons, the landscape matures. Plants knit together, suppress weeds, and support pollinators. Soil improves. Maintenance decreases. The garden becomes immersive and alive straightaway.

Year 2, we replaced more lawn with wildflowers.
We returned the following year to replace some more lawn with wildflowers!

Ultimately, the most beautiful gardens are not instant. They are alive and express that beauty when it’s time. Jessecology creates landscapes that reward patience, offering lasting structure, resilience, and beauty through every stage of growth.
