Native plant landscape designer.

What Is a Native Plant Landscape Designer? (And how Jessecology became the premier incubator space in the NYS ecology/horticulture industry to introduce new native plant landscape designers to the field.)

Jesse Peters’ Formative Years.
Jesse Peters, the founder of Jessecology, was born in Vermont. Certainly, growing up immersed in the wild beauty of the Northeast shaped her with a deep connection to nature. Multiple women in her family worked in some facet of the horticulture/forestry/agriculture industry. Their wisdom, passed down through gardens, greenhouses, forest/watershed assessments and NYC garden tours, sparked a lifelong love for plants and ecology.
In college, Jesse began her studies in Canada. She enjoyed solace and inspiration in the natural pockets of the city of Calgary, AB. But the draw to wildness was stronger. She moved to Yosemite National Park to get closer—much closer—to the pulse of the natural world. Eventually, she studied Ecology formally at Skidmore College, and shortly after, Jessecology was born.

Beginning Jessecology. Circa 2005/2011.
At first, Jesse was the sole landscape designer. Jessecology began as a solopreneurship, a soft launch in 2005, culminating in official status by 2011. At that time, Jesse met with every client, designed every garden plan personally. Additionally, she planted every native plant in every garden.
But the company Jessecology has ultimately- and organically- evolved into a collective eco-landscaping guild with a team Jesse has trained. Subsequently, Jesse focuses on mentoring and teaching novices in the industry to become skilled native plant landscape designers. Another priority for Jesse in the current milieu is designing large-scale projects— eco-landscaping for new construction homes and large full-property native plant transformations. Thereupon, the company has become a true incubator space: a warm entry point into the ecology and horticulture industry for novices. This is a place where plant literacy and ecology wisdom are taught, then shared with the local world.
